Five Tips For A Hard-Working Wardrobe
Plus see my entire wardrobe and book me as your stylist :)
I’m on a mission to make my wardrobe work really hard for me and I thought I’d share recent things I’ve been doing to achieve this. As someone that works from home, I have to be excited to wear my clothes otherwise I could very easily wind up in leggings everyday.
When I say hard-working, I mean filled with pieces that make you feel good, you’re desperate to wear, wear regularly as a result and are suited to your lifestyle. We really want to avoid that ‘I have nothing to wear feeling’.
Here are my tips -
1. LOG YOUR WARDROBE DIGITALLY (+ PEEK AT MINE)
I’ve been tracking my wardrobe and outfits digitally using the Indyx app for the last month or so as I’ve mentioned previously and I am LOVING it. It’s so satisfying and truly such a clever app. Finally I can live out my Cher from Clueless digital wardrobe fantasies.
Having gamified the process somewhat with Indyx, planning outfits and getting dressed is so much easier. Being able to see every item, which my limited physical wardrobe space doesn’t allow for IRL means I can make more informed purchasing decisions and re-ignite my love for long-lost pieces. Packing is transformed as I can plan my outfits in advance - I’m off to Norway tomorrow and I don’t have packing dread for once!
I’ve actually made my wardrobe public for the first time so you can see it here and I’m gradually adding links to everything so you can always refer back to if if you’re looking for a link to something I’ve worn :)
If you download the app you can use the referral code theindiaedit to get $10 of styling credit (more on that shortly!)
2. IDENTIFY YOUR THREE STYLE WORDS
One thing Indyx urges you to do is identify your three style words that encapsulate the way you’d like to show up through your outfits. It’s a method coined by style consultant Allison Bornstein.
I’ve landed on chic, considered and playful. I’d love to know if you think that’s right?
To expand on why I chose these - to me, chic encompasses a look that is pulled together, balanced and elevated. Considered refers to the different elements of consideration - styling, layers, fabrics, colours, accessories and how everything ultimately comes together. Effortless, but with some effort. Playful alludes to an injection of fun and youthfulness into an otherwise sophisticated look. This could be from the addition of some colour (through shoes, socks, layering pieces), unexpected or contrasting details (a chunky belt, big earrings, hair accessories) or something more overtly fun and statement (think feathers, a cut out, OTT sunglasses etc).
3. SPEAK TO A STYLIST (E.G. ME!)
Now I appreciate hiring a styling sounds a bit OTT - up until recently I thought Stylists were only for Saudi princesses and red-carpet celebs with money to burn. Indyx has changed that allowing you to book a Stylist through their app who can see all the pieces in your digital wardrobe and create outfits for you.
I am SO excited to now be a Stylist on the Indyx app - for $175 (~£140) I will put together 10 outfits for you using your already existing wardrobe complete with a few purchase recommendations and notes for each look. This is all done within a week of your booking. I really can’t wait to work with some of you in this way!
If you’re finding your wardrobe isn’t working for you how you feel it should be, commissioning a stylist (myself or otherwise) can offer a fresh perspective and expert advice on how to wear things in a whole new way. I feel like this is particularly helpful at the start of a new season, for a trip or just to spruce up your style at work or on the weekends.
I love how Indyx have made this so accessible and I’m very tempted to book in with someone myself just for a new take on my wardrobe. Remember you can also get $10 off the personal styling service by applying the code theindiaedit when signing up to the app.
To book in the app you go to ‘Style’ > ‘The Lookbook’ > ‘Choose Your Stylist’ and you’ll see me there!
4. IDENTIFY YOUR MOST WORN PIECES
Tracking my wardrobe has made me realise there are truly a handful of things that always end up in my weekly or even daily rotation (and washing pile as a result!). I’d say they’re pretty aligned with my ‘three words’ too! They fall into these categories -
Loose-Fitting Bottoms
I’ve really shifted from preferring waist-cinching, leg skimming, cropped jeans to a mid-low rise, loose, long fit. Maybe it’s because they’re closer to trackies? I love the relaxed vibe they bring to an outfit as well as a good dose of contrast
Cardigans
When it comes to jumpers my preference is a high, round-necked cardigan. As a general rule I steer clear of V-necks 99% of the time. I love to wear my cardigans mostly buttoned (perhaps 1-2 undone at the top/bottom) and with a high necked vest or tee underneath for a layered look
Tanks + Tees + Long Sleeve Tees
There’s rarely a day that goes by where I am not layering up a plain top or tee. They add warmth in the colder months, but also just add a clean and considered detail to an outfit. I think everyone needs a couple of tees and tanks in white and off-white. My preference is for a high neck over a scoop.
Oversized Outerwear
Great outerwear is an essential for me, particularly living in a country where it’s required pretty much year-round! A beautiful coat or jacket can really make a look. I always opt for something oversized to give that off-duty, luxury feel. Sizing up a couple of sizes can totally transform a piece (it doesn’t have to be expensive to look expensive). I love a big jacket or a long coat. My preference is for single-breasted (echoing my no V-necks rule above..!). Obviously I love an attached scarf too!
Crossbody Bags
A designer bag was the first luxury item I purchased, saving up for months and months for a Mulberry bag, back in 2011. Bags have the ability to really elevate and enhance an outfit - I love a coloured bag. My go-to is a crossbody for their practicality and versatility. I usually opt for one with detachable straps so it can be used as a clutch / handbag too
Sunglasses
I don’t ever leave the house without a pair of sunnies! I’ve bought and sold a number of designer pairs as I always go back to the same ones I have from Le Specs and Lexxola. Occasionally I’ll get a fun, cheaper pair to mix things up a little.
Skirts
I’ve turned into a real year-round skirt lover. Whether it’s a mini-mini or a maxi-maxi I am here for it. With minis I’m loving leaning into preppy skirt styles with pleats and checks or keeping things straight and boxy. No bodycons here. I pair minis with 15 or 30 denier tights. When it comes to maxis I like an A-line or fuller skirt as I don’t love a bias cut silky style on myself. You know I actually don’t hate a knee length style.. I think we’re going to see these coming back along with pedal pushers and skorts. You have been warned.
Longline Tops
There’s something so elegant about a longline top - gone are the days where I reach for crop tops and little camis. Instead I’m switching to longer vests and bustiers. I particularly love these paired with a long skirt or with a necktie thrown on.
5. CLEAR OUT REGULARLY
When I got to cataloguing my wardrobe, the process instantly highlighted pieces I wasn’t feeling inspired by, which motivated me to have a much-needed clear out - cue my recent clothes sale and Vinted upload. My style is ever-evolving and I’m already loving the refreshed wardrobe I have remaining, which feels totally ‘me’.
I used to do this twice a year, but I am going to try and do it even more frequently. If it doesn’t make me feel good now, it’s got to go. You don’t want any dead-weight or what-if items. I used to have so much occassionwear, but now with rental sites I’ve sold a lot of it.
It feels like a weight lifted and I love knowing exactly what is in my wardrobe thanks to using Indyx and having regular clear outs. So much more gets worn most importantly.
I’d love to hear your tips! I’ll be back with The Weekly Edit on Friday. Please don’t forget to subscribe and pass on to your friends - it really means the world!
